As someone that has grown up surrounded by beaches and done surf life saving, I know how the sea works. Lots of people dont. Every summer multiple tourists die here because they don’t respect the sea, if you’re going to the coast, here’s a thing I saw on Facebook.

wow.

reblogging for all of us that grew up in land locked states, then visit the ocean and are used to just plunging into a lake.

All of this applies to Lake Michigan, as well. The rips aren’t as big, but they do happen. We lose tourists every year.

as it heads into summer i was made aware that a lot of people never learned this at school and i realise i grew up on the coast and had a lifeguard for a teacher so maybe it isn't part of a curriculum but anyone can end up at a beach some day and you should know abt rips before you go also pls be aware that the flags are not magical. they are the part of the beach receiving active supervision though if you get in trouble between the flags you will be noticed pretty quickly but if you stray it may take longer and i've been at a beach when a flash rip appeared between the flags and guess who got in it? yea me in my defense the first time i was oblivious and was suddenly like 20m away. i just. swam across to where other ppl were the second time i was literally verifying that i was between the flags. i was like yea i was here before surely not a rip? oh. like i felt SO DUMB but this was obvs not the worst bc i could easily swim back to the flags and then to shore within abt 30metres yes there was a third time and i feel embarrassed but i had to lunge to avoid a fckn boogie board and got swept away literally after that i was so angry and my knee was bruised bc i hadn't avoided the board i went and sat in the shade to sulk and they closed the beach not long after bc i guess a rip inside the flags isn't ideal esp when the flags were pretty narrow to begin with like all this happened in like maybe 30 to 40 minutes? it was a beach known for rough conditions which is the appeal tbh i reflect and think the lifesavers mustbhave just watched me get into the same rip 3 times in like 20 minutes and i feel so embarrassed but it's so easy to be lulled into security by the flags and it's so easy for that to be dangerous i'm lucky that a) i am a decent beach swimmer and b) the rip was pretty gentle and a favourable angle but yeah rips can and will change direction location and strength so be aware even if you're in the flags
